Texas Instruments "Day of Caring" Food Drive

Great Job! You made a difference to those needing food by collecting and transporting non-perishable food items to The Salvation Army of Grayson County.  Sam Ciani, Wafer Fabrication Manager of TI believes the week of “Day of Caring” will help improve the quality of life in our community.  Addressing the needs is a great opportunity to celebrate the spirit of American Volunteerism.

The United Way Keeps Pace in Time of Need

The money raised during last year's campaign will soon be reaching area agencies who are seeing an increase in traffic due to the slowing economy. Volunteers have been busy working out how to stretch United Way’s limited dollars to give to its partners.

Volunteers are faced with the problem of United Way's partners seeking more than $ 1.7 million in funding and having $958,000 to give. Although the nation’s economic problems have not hit Grayson County as hard as they have in many places across the country, partner agencies have seen an increasing number of  local people seeking help.

Like many non-profits across the country, United Way is experiencing a decline in collections, just as its partner agencies are experiencing more need. Layoffs and plant closings are making this worse. "United Way has always had a percentage of money not collected; however, this year it is higher," said Velma Starks, finance administrator for United Way of Grayson County."

Although the collections are down, United Way and the agencies are very thankful for the generosity of this community. “People here are giving and when called upon, Grayson County steps up to any challenge," said a campaign volunteer.

"We are very thankful to the community for their support and the volunteers that spent hours upon hours of time raising funds and then putting the money where it is needed most.  It's truly a community driven process," said David Cortinas, Executive Director “We are thankful for every single donor that is giving a little to help their neighbor."

The funding cycle is for two years and will begin in July.

It's About The Ask

As we gear up for this year's campaign, the staff is working hard on this year's presentation.  I remember my first United Way director saying "Case statement Dave, the foundation of a good campaign is a strong case statement."

It took me a while to really understand what he meant by a strong case statement.  As I grew in my United Way career I learned the contents of a strong case statement cannot just be a great story or just filled in with numbers statitstics.  As a United Way professional we can also get caught up in the many acronyms and jargon of our own world and that my friend can confuse anyone.

It is my belief, in order to have a strong case statement it has to be balanced.  A strong case statement comes from the within.  I believe it has to inspire the heart as thats where the giving begins.  At the same time it has to make good sense and the donor believes his gift is being used efficient and effectively.  Its when we find this balance will one be a committed donor.

Only then will we make the "ask".
